Welcome to my newly opened website. Here you will find information about Bjäre, especially the history of this region.
Bjäre is a peninsula, situated on the southern part of Sweden's west coast. It is well known for its beauty and its dramatic scenery.
Thousands of people have chosen Bjäre as a second home. Tourism has become very important during the last 100 years. Tourists come to Bjäre to enjoy the landscape, the beaches, tennis, golf, sailing and its rich history.
Agriculture has been important in Bjäre for thousands of years. Nowadays Bjäre is especially famous as a centre for cultivation of early potatoes in Sweden.
During the era of the sailing ship many of Bjäre's inhabitants were sailors. Many becoming captain and sailing all over the world.

The bronze age
In the Bronze Age about 4 000 years ago, people lived in villages througout the Bjäre peninsula and build cultivation terraces in the mild coastal climate. Traces of the people of Bronze age are found all over the place. The climate of the peninsula has probably changed for the worse since then. The burn beating pravtise in villages during the bronze age had probably depleted the soils. Few reminds are found and very little I known about the period before the late Medieval Age.

Gröthögarna – eight burial mounds from the Bronze Age.
Along the west and south coasts of the Bjäre peninsula, there are over 40 burial mounds of varying sizes. The most imposing ones, called “Gröthögarna” , you find on the Ingelstorp shoreside. Their name comes from the word “gryt” meaning “stone heap”. The mounds or barrows were employed for the interment of several persons throughout the Bronze Age and probably also during the early Iron Age. They were built of stones from the rubble stone fields in this area. The stones belong to the species of rock known as quartzite, converted sandstone. In them you can see fossils in the form of petrified passages once made by lugworms. These lugworms lived in a sea which used to exist here about 600 million years ago. The coastline we see today is not very different from the one seen by Bronze Age people: these days the land along the Bjäre peninsula hardly rises at all. We can, however, detect traces of what were once beaches along a sea called the Littorina Sea, which existed here 6000 – 3000 B.C. The different levels of the Littorina Sea created long, parallel systems of banks with rubble stones. At its highest level, the Littorina Sea stood about 14 meters above the present sea level. Along the banks in the adjacent fields many objects from the agrarian Stone Age have been discovered, proving that the area was used by human beings even then.
Hallands Väderö
This island is a pearl in the ocean! Located at fifteen minute boat ride off Torekov, this island offers so much – beautiful scenery, swimming etc. You can walk around the island. It takes a few hours. From the cliffs you can take a dip in the crystal clear water.

Tennis
Swedish Open is the classical tennis tournament in Båstad. For several years the tournament has been crowned the best by players on the ATP tour and has become very popular internationally.

Take a seeweed bath in Torekov
Already in the late 1800s spa was offered in Bjäre. In Torekov you can take a seeweed bath in “Warmbadhuset”. Many big hotels features spa treatments and baths. For runners Bjäre is a paradise. The terrain offers fantastic tours where your capacity can be tested on the level you wish.
