The Cultural landscape of the Bjäre peninsula

The peninsula is situated in the north-west corner of the province Skåne (Scania) in southern Sweden. Bjäre is surrounded on three sides by the sea. To the west the bay of Skälderviken and the Kattegat. To the north by the bay of Laholm . The area is governed by the two administrative districts, Ängelholm and Båstad and consists of seven parishes: Barkåkra, Förslöv, Grevie, Västra Karup, Hov, Torekov and Båstad.
The peninsula is dominated by the ridge Hallandsås, that runs diagonally northwest and is about 150 to 200 meters high. The northwestern spur of Hallandsås is Hovs Hallar, where the bedrock descends abruptly into the sea. At this site, the bedrock has been eroded by wind and seawater resulting in steep cliffs with precipipes of stones in between. The coastel plain between Skälderviken and Hallandsås is nowadays intensively cultivated farmland.
The cultural landscape of today. The landscape of the Bjäre peninsula is remarkable and fascinating because of a high diversity of habitats. The vegetation on the plain ridge Hallandsås largely consists of forest, fens and bogs with relatively poor vegetation. In this area most farms are small and based on a combination of agriculture and husbandry. The western coastal plain, located south of Hallandsås, and between Ängelholm and Torekov, is intensively cultivated farmland. In some places the arable land is broken through by small rivers or groves of deciduous trees, mostly consisting of beech and oak.
